"The Elisha Witt Chapter, Daughter of the American Revolution, is named in the honor of Elisha Witt, a Revolutionary War soldier who migrated from Virginia to Winston, Estill County, Kentucky, and settled in the area.
Elisha, the son of John and Elizabeth Witt, served in the Continental Army from 1776 until 1781, where he was at the Battle of Yorktown. The abstract of Revolutionary War pension application for Witt states the following: "Sol. was b 18 Sep 1759 in Albemarle, Co., Va & lived in Amherst Co., VW when he enl, sol m Phebee (--) 17 Jul 1781 in Albemarle Co., VA, sol appl 20 Nov 1832 in Estill Co., VA(KY?) having lived there for 30 years, sold 16 Dec 1835 & his wid appl 18 Jul 1839 in Estill Co., KY aged 80, sol' & wid's children were William b in Sep 1783, Anna b 20 Aug 1784, Charles b 21 mth illegible in 1786, Abner b 20 Jun 1789, Elisa b 1 Feb 1790 or 1792, Nathan b 20 Oct 1794, name torn off but was b 19 Apr 1797, David b 27 Oct 1798, John b 27 Jan 1801 & Silas b 9 Sep 1803."
