Ansil Daniel

From Estill County History

"ANSIL DANIEL, a retired physician, at Irvine, Ky., was born in Clark County, Ky., August 2, 1801. His father, Charles Daniel, was a farmer by occupation. He moved from Virginia to Kentucky at an early date and settled in what is now Clark County, where he died about 1800. The father of Charles Daniel was James Daniel, a Virginian, who settled in Clark County, Ky., where he followed farming until his death. Charles Daniel was married about the year 1800 to Miss Nancy Duncan, a daughter of Joseph Duncan, of Clark County. To this union were born three children, viz: Ansil, Polly and Dillard C. The last named was raised on the farm until he began to go to school, he then continued until he graduated at Transylvania College, Lexington, Ky., receiving a diploma from that institution. He then studied law with Hon. Chelton Allan, of Winchester, Clark County, Ky. After studying about two years he commenced the practice of law in Winchester, Ky., with a brilliant prospect before him. He died in 1826 or '27. Ansil Daniel was also brought up on the farm and received his education from the common schools. When quite young he abandoned farming and commenced clerking in stores, which he followed a few years, and then commenced the study of medicine with Drs. Duke and Combs, of Mount Sterling, Ky., and soon afterwards attended the Transylvania University at Lexington, Ky., and in 1823 located at Irvine, Estill County, Ky., where he practiced medicine very successfully until about 1884, when he retired. He is now one of the oldest physicians in Kentucky, and one who has always had a large practice and has always been regarded as one of the most reliable physicians in his section of the country. About 1826 he married Miss Sarah M. Price, a daughter of Moses M. and Katherine (Broaddus) Price, of Estill County. To this union were born eight children, four of whom are now living, viz: Jane, Bell M., Gabriella and Moses P. Mrs. Sarah M. Daniel died November, 1880. In 1825 the Doctor was elected to the Legislature from Estill County, and was afterwards re-elected three times, representing the county four terms in all. He is a member of the F. & A. M. fraternity." - Kentucky: A History Of The State, by William Henry Perrin, J. H. Battle, G. C. Kniffin, Published by F. A. Battey and Company, Louisville, Ky, 1888
