Douglas Wayne Chaney

"Douglas Wayne Chaney, 59, died on Wednesday, January 31, at his residence. Born August 28, 1958, he was a native of Estill County, and a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was strong in his faith, and was a member of New Heights Church in Berea. He made it known to all that God’s purpose for him was to minister to others, which he did daily. He was a true missionary.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, where he served full-time and with the Naval Reserves for 10 years before being honorably discharged in February 1986. He was awarded the National Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, 1st Good Conduct Award, Navy Rifle Marksmanship Ribbon, and according to him, he was also the #1 “tater peeler” on the ship. During this time, he served the following ships: Azores Naval Air Station; Naval Facility at Argentina, Newfoundland; USS Biddle, a guided missile cruiser out of Norfolk, Virginia; Jacksonville, Florida Naval Air Station; and the USS Yosemite, a destroyer tender out of Mayport, Florida. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 79, and a proud member of the Honor Guard.

He was a retired rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. He often would boast about never missing a day’s work, and how proud he was to serve the residents of Estill County for 29 years. He loved bluegrass music, his family and the Kentucky Wildcats.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Betty Chaney; and siblings, Doris Sears, Paul Kenny Kuykendoll, and Joyce Sasser of Hamilton, Ohio.

Survivors include his wife, Crystall Chaney; his children, Becky Crawford (Joe) of Irvine, Christopher Chaney (BJ) of Richmond, and Corey Hacker (Mary) of Mt. Vernon; and his grandchildren, Camble Crawford, Teagan Crawford, Andrew Chaney, Kyser Chaney, Ethan Martin, and Acacia Hacker; a brother, Darold Chaney of Hamilton, Ohio; and sisters, Charlotte Waldridge of Lawrenceburg, Joyce Sewell of Corbin, Janet Parrish of Frankfort, and Bonnie Sallee (Gary) of Irvine; mother-in-law, Barb Schrink (Rick) of Brodhead; and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.

Memorial services were conducted Saturday, February 3, at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Doug’s name for Memorial Day Flags distributed by the American Legion, Post 79, in Estill County.
