"Edward Everett Puckett was born on August 21, 1943 on Tipton Ridge in Estill county Kentucky. He was the seventh of eight children born to John and Zella (Flynn) Puckett.
Ed’s elementary school years were spent at Mt. Carmel School on the Furnace Junction Road near the Mt. Carmel Christian Church. The school was commonly known as the Tipton Ridge School. In 1961 Ed graduated from Estill County High School (located in the now Central Office building). Except for a very short time spent in Ohio working, Ed lived in Estill county all of his life.
On August 24, 1968 Ed married Kathleen Stone, the daughter of Lawrence Stone. Ed and Kathy had one daughter, Carol Lynn Puckett (who married Chris Dause), and had two grandsons, Lucas and Josh, who fondly referred to their grandfather as “Big Daddy”.
Ed was a retired employee of the Department of Transportation for the State of Kentucky. He served with the Kentucky National Guard, was a member of the Irvine Free Methodist Church, the Garden Thyme Herb Club, and a staunch supporter of the Estill County football and basketball programs, attending all of the games both home and away. Ed was also a devoted member of the Estill County Historical and Genealogical Society.
Although Ed had many interests the pursuit of the history of Estill County and its people seemed to be the forefront. Over the years Ed travelled hundreds of miles and spent an untold number of hours in county court houses, libraries, state archives, and historical societies all over Kentucky and other states searching for Estill county history and genealogy. Ed’s mind soaked up information like a sponge when it came to Estill county families. It didn’t seem to matter what family name was mentioned Ed always knew something about that family’s history. Through his research, Ed helped many people complete or prove their families’ lines. The vast amount of historical and genealogical research done by Ed (with Kathy’s help on many occasions) has resulted in finding records and stories that may have remained hidden. The Estill County Historical and Genealogical Society utilizing Ed’s research materials have published over fifty books for the ECHGS.
After a long illness, at the age of 66, Edward Everett Puckett died quietly at home on August 11, 2010. It has often been said that when an older person dies “a small library is lost” and that is certainly true of Ed. He was a devoted historian and genealogist whose contributions to his community will continue to be long lasting and far-reaching for generations to come.
