From Estill County History

"ELISHA L. COCKRELL, deceased, was born in Breathitt County, Ky., December 4, 1823, and was a son of Simon and Mary (Smith) Cockrell. Elisha L. Cockrell was reared on the farm and received a common-school education. In 1845 he moved to Estill County, where he devoted all his time to agricultural pursuits. About 1847 he was elected to the Legislature from Estill County, and served one term, being subsequently elected county judge of Estill County, and re-elected to the same office some four or five times. In 1866 he settled near Irvine, Estill County, where he died November 2, 1876. He was an extensive farmer all his life, and was one of the largest landholders in the county, owning at the time of his death about 1,500 acres of land. He was a man beloved by all, and his death was mourned by a large circle of warm friends and relatives. He was one of the most prosperous and enterprising men of the county. During the existence of that political party, Mr. Cockrell was a Whig, and afterward affiliated with the Democratic party. July 1, 1845, he married Miss Rebecca A. McMonogle, a daughter of Aaron and Mary (Nolen) McMonogle, natives of Kentucky, of Irish descent. To this union were born twelve children, nine daughters and three sons, viz: Mary P., Sarah L., Bell F., Madison, Nannie. Amanda, Ella, Rebecca, Logan, Florence, Lizzie and George. The family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and rank among the most highly respected citizens of Estill County." - Kentucky: A History Of The State, by William Henry Perrin, J. H.
